I was born and raised in Brooklyn and have moved to SI recently to escape outrageous rents. I'm really digging SI, especially the North Shore, where more and more creative people are moving to.

I find the rest of America to be boring culturally. Can't beat NYC! But it's a great experience to leave it for college at least and come back home with more appreciation.

Where in SI are you from?

Good Luck!

Greg:

Was reading all the responses tonight. I see that you are the only one who suggested a new alternative to the Turing test :)

As I said clearly, my notion of intelligence or friend (as in somebody to converse with meaninfully) does not involve being able to date them. As I asked you to imagine, what if there had been two intelligent species on earth. (Dolphin lovers may argue there already are.) You wouldn't date the other species but could still be friends with it.

Why is this incorrect or badly reasoned?

p.s. All we wanted you to say in that question was "The internet is decentralized. Princeton connects to some network provider, and Stanford to some other provider, and who is to say what route the network will figure out to connect these two providers." This much was discussed in lecture.

In general attending the lectures should be enough to answer the questions.

Hope that helps.

Hope the work you're doing on the course is interesting...

If you like the sleuthing around, here is another page of interest.

Hello,
I write this in Finland, in a small town called Kristiinankaupunki. I'm trying to find out some connections between Elvira Madigan and this town - I have heard some rumors that she danced once - must be in the end of the 1870's - on a tightrope outside our kitchen window, in a small lane called Catwhippers alley... - I'm a journalist and writing just now a guide for this town for a walking tour. The guide concentrates into the great time of the sailing ships here, from the 1830 to the end of the decade. Elvira's performance would be a speciality in the guide! Maybe she came here with some sailing ship from Stockholm?

Anyway, do you happen to know can I find somewhere more information about Elvira's tours? I'll try to find out the time when she was here. I know that some local newspaper has written in the 1940's about it, I was today reading the volumes but didn't find the article.

Thank you very much if you can answer here!

Matt -

I don't really know which schools have joint philosophy/computer science programs. But surely someone is doing research on that boundary, since, as you say, it seems like a promising area to explore. Perhaps Prof. Arora is a better person to ask about this?

This will be my first of many apologies for how late in coming I am to this blog. Umar, it seems I was not the only philosophy major interested by your post. I am actually not surprised that there seem to be a fair number of philosophy majors in this class--I have heard many people in my department express a desire to take a COS course that was both accessible (i.e. no real programming knowledge required) but also put a philosophical gloss on the material. I like the approach you describe in your post as a way of skirting thorny semantic questions. I wonder whether other schools have specific programs that combine philosophy and computer science? Certainly, it seems like it would be a very fruitful marriage of disciplines. I guess my questions for you is: will androids ever dream of electric sheep?

You can program it using the BASIC language. There is also a "kiddie" interface (not one I recommend) that you can use. I think all this is on the web, and certainly on the CD-ROM.

I became obsessed with Citizen Cope at the beginning of this year and despite the fact Kyle claims to be fan, he's a poser. I have seen them in concert twice in the city--the first time the only song I really knew was "Bullet and a Target" but by the second which was like 2 weeks later I knew the whole album....also a big Duke bball fan...sweeet.

Strangely enough Zaneta introduced me to Citizen Cope the other night, and now I listen to "Sideways" over and over again on my computer all day and night. Actually it's playing right now much to the dismay of the people trying to watch the Olympics next to us. Good stuff.

I took a philosophy of mind class a couple of semesters ago and I agree that the semantics can get pretty cumbersome. I think the other question of can computers attain consciousness (whatever that means) is an interesting one that I hope we discuss in this class. Judging from these blogs it seems as though a fwe of us are interested in that topic.

Just adding that, randomly enough, when I visited Princeton as a HS senior, Derrick hosted me. He also takes like 5-7 classes a semester, which is pretty impressive in my book, and probably in yours too, though I haven't read it.
